What is lingerie?

The word lingerie is derived from the French word ‘lin’ meaning linen.

Although lingerie in English tends to imply sensual underwear generally made of fine fabrics ie silk, satin or lace, in France it means underwear worn by both sexes .

Women in the early 20^th century chose to wear underwear either to try and change their shape, for reasons of hygiene or for modesty.

However as we moved into the later years of the 20^th century a slow but sure change occurred with the arrival of so called ‘controversial lingerie ’ in the shape of glamour garments intended to provoke and cause excitement among the opposite sex, which ,of course, it did.

Nowadays, in the 21^st century, intimate apparel shops line the shopping arcades. Everything imaginable is there for the taking.

No longer are women be expected to wear voluminous undergarments indeed today’s lingerie can flatter, provoke, caress and stimulate the senses.

French lingerie is always regarded by the male species as a perfect gift for their beloved and there are very few women who do not own an extensive lingerie wardrobe.
