Negligees came into popular fashion in the nineteen twenties. The intention was a garment for bedroom wear that was comfortable but provocative and it has kept its sex appeal to this day.
It comes as no surprise that the negligee was first introduced in France, the center of innovative high fashion, as early as the 18th century.
Just as now the garment was designed to bring glamour to the bedroom although at that time it covered the body from head to toe in the style of women’s day dresses of the period.

Super glamorous half naked top models sashaying down the runway at last nights Victoria Secrets Lingerie Fashion Show had the audience in a spin.
Thongs, corsets, thigh high stockings, crystal covered bras and sexy high heeled boots. What more could a red blooded man want?
Oh yes, and just to make it a real party how about inviting the Spice Girls to perform their long awaited reunion, which they apparently performed with gusto.

One of the earliest bras was made by Mary Phelps Jacob in New York in 1913 although history tells us that women, throughout the centuries, have designed and worn garments designed normally to enhance their bodies often it’s been to to try and hide their breasts.
Mary, however, devised a simple bra made out of handkerchiefs so that she could wear an evening dress without the stiff wire boned corsets that were popular in those times. Due to the attention her ‘bra’ attracted Mary set up in the underwear business, took out a patent, and so the ‘brassiere’ was invented.

Chambers Twentieth Century dictionary tells us that a corset is “a close fitting stiff inner bodice: stays: a stiff belt coming down over the hips” with a bodice being described as a close fitting inner garment.
Ancient artefacts found in Crete give us our first glimpse of the corset although doubtless women had for centuries before this had worn garments to trim up their waists and emphasize their hips to attract the opposite sex.
We know that from around 3000 BC the ancient Greeks and later the Romans were practicing tight bandaging on the bodies of young girls to encourage slimness and straight limbs as they recognized the desirability of a trim body.

How this attracts sales is only understandable if readers want to see people made to look stupid and are impressed by the least of minor celebrities ‘here today gone tomorrow’ comes to mind!
